While I’m sorry to have inadvertently caused any offense, I’m actually really glad this came up. I tried to be fairly diplomatic in my language in this comic because I could see the potential for offense to men who also menstruate. I’d actually really love it if some folks could give me some feedback on the best language to use in these circumstances, and particularly some clarity around the word ‘guy’.

Being cis-gendered, my personal experience is pretty limited. I’ve been very lucky recently to have met a trans* guy on the I’m Awesome Thanks social network who’s extremely open and willing to discuss his transition with me in the name of helping me to relieve my ignorance. The problem I’m having though is that pronoun/identity preferences vary so widely.

Does ‘guy’ generally refer to male-identified people? Is it just a sign of our male-dominated language that ‘hey guys’ is considered an appropriate greeting for a mixed-gender group, but ‘hey ladies’ isn’t? Does ‘male’ exclusively mean cis-gendered men? Any discussion that helps to better educate me is greatly appreciated. Thanks tumblads and tumbladies :)
